While working on a troopship at Port Chalmers ,on 25th January last, John Curror, boilermaker, met with an accident, from which he died two days later. Afi deceased was injured in the course of his employment by Messrs. Stevenson and Cook, Ltd., that company was liable to his widow under the Workers' Compensation Act, but, acting on legal advice, she took proceedings for £2000 damages against the Crown, under the Crown Suits Act, claiming on behalf of' herself and two children. Mr. P. J. o'Regan, who acted for Mrs. Curror and her children, now authorises the statement that the case has been settled, the Crown agreeing to pay £1000 damages and £25 costs. Accordingly the amount agreed upin has been paid into Court at Dunedin, where judgment will be taken by consent, and the fund apportioned by the Court as between the widow and children. - The weekly prayer meeting of the Wolbngton V.M.C.A. will bo held tonight at 8 Voloek. The. Rev. W. Shirer will be the speaker at the men's meeting on Sunday at 4 p.m. Mr. R ; Semple, miners' agont, will put the men's case in tho coal mines' dispute before the public at a meeting in the King's Theatre, to-morrow night. The Salvation Army will givo a welcome' to its first chaplain from France to-morrow. Commissioner Hodder is- to. preside:, and Chaplain-Captain Bladia will give a special war talk. The meetings take place at tho Vivian-strcot Citadel. The public are invited. An address by Mr. John Page on "Tho Witch of Endor" will bo given in the Spiritualifttt,' Church, New Century Hall, to-morow night, at 7 o'olock,
