CASUALTIES TO NEW ZEALANDERS

MEN WITH OVERSEAS FORCES.

LONDON, 14th May,

Lt. J. W. Piri'ckney; K.E.H. (Canterbury), is reported missing. He joined his regiment as a trooper, and was commissioned in September, 1915.

2nd Lt; J. S. Mills,. R.F.A.-(formerly Staff-sergeant, Auckland Battalion), lias been slightly wounded in the left arm. He got iiis commission at the beginning of last year. Capt. L. B. Wallace, R.F.A. (Auckland), before the war a student at Glasgow University, was wounded at the end of April, and was taken to hospital at Calais. About a year ago Capt. Wal-. lace was gas-poisoned.

New .Zealanders in the Imperial Forces recently admitted to hospital have included: Pte. J. F. Stewart, K.E.H. (Auckland), wounded; Pte. H. Meek, M.G.C. (Waika-to), slight wound lefthand; Pioneer V. Dobson (Waihi), dangerously iil; Pte. 0. V. Kibble white, D.C.L.I. (Napier), slight fever. Mr. R. G. Earle, K.E.H. (Wanganui), is posted as missing.

Capt. St. J. A. M. Tolhurst, N.Z.M.C, was killed by a shell coming right into the dug-out which-was- being used as an aid post. A fellow officer says he had shown remarkable heroism some two weeks before during the course of, a stunt. His devotion to duty on that occasion was much eulogised by those present, although the concussion of falling shells put out the lights. "He went about his work with a quiet heroism that wa6 an inspiring example to us all." With him in the aid post was the Rev. A. Allen, C.F., who was also killed.

Pte;. Tuheka Mateuga, of the Pioneer Battalion, aged 25, was accidentally drowned in the River Stour at Christchurch a few days ago. Recent lists of wounded officers contain the names of Lt.-Col. L. G. D. Hutchison, M.C., North Staffordshire Regiment (Capt. King's Liverpools), and Capt. T. F. Gilkinson, M.C., R.F.A. Lt.-Col. Hutchison (son of Mr. G. Hutchison, Welington), was transfered to the North Staffordshire Regiment last December from the Royal Engineers. He has twice been mentioned in despatches. , Capt. Gilkinson belongs to Invercargill, but he had been in China for some time until reaching England early in 1016 to offer his services. i

It is announced thai Lt. Charles Edward' Anketell, M.M., of the Royal Air Force, has been killed in action, aged' 23. Lt. Anketell came from Napier, and three years ago was an assistant engineer in the R.N.R. Later he joined" the Royal Fusiliers, and was jvwarded the Military Medal for services in France. He joined theiR.A.F. early this year. The funeral of Lieutenant-Colonel C. F. D. Cook, D.S.O;, Wellington Regt. (Marton), who died of cerebrospinal meningitis" at Netley Hospital, took place at Reading, where his wife^lives. It was conducted by the Rev. F. J. Howard and the Rev. C. E. OH. Tobin, C.F., in St. Luke's Church, where the deceased officer was married only si>: months ago. Full military honours were accorded, the firing party, buglers, and gun-carriage being supplied by tho N.Z.E.F. The pall-bearers were Briga-dier-General Hart, Colonels Griffiths, Short, and .Smith, Majors Rose and Green..... Amongst those present were Colonel Weston, Major Hardie, Major G. S. Abram, Captain M'Cormick, and a party of V.A.D. nurses from St. Luke's Hospital.

At a casualty clearing station the death occurred of Captain Theophilus R. Jackson, M.C., Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. During the Sonime advance in 1916 Captain Jackson was attached to the staff, and then served as brigade-major to the N.Z. Infantry and as instructor at one of the schools for officers. He rejoined his battalion at his own request, and fell a few weeks later.

From Mesopotamia news has. come of the death on 2nd May of William Graham Bas&ett, eldest son of the late Mr. John C. Lee-Bassett, of New Zealand and Bath, and of Mrs. Bassett of Bath. He was on service. His brother is Major J. C. Bassett; R.G.A.

New Zealanders serving in the Imperial Forces who have recently been wounded, include : Captain F. N. H. Beamish, M.C, Royal Warwickshire Rgt. (son of Mr. G. R. Beamish, Whana Whana Station, Hawkes Bay), for the second time; Captain P. R. Woodhouse, M.C. and Bar, R.A.M.C. (Wellington and Dunedin), for the second time; 2nd Lt.. G\ W. Batley, Middlesex Rgt. (formerly Rftmn. 20943, N.Z.R.B.'); 2nd Lt. H. K. Corkill, R.F.'A. (Wellington); Captain H. C. Davies, M.C, R;F.A. ; Captain W. S. Glenn, M.C, , R.F.A. (Wanganui), severely gassed, and at Netley Hospital ; Lt. G. B. Dall, R.E. (Wellington), severely gassed (formerly Sgt. 25046, N.Z. Div. Sig. Co.); Lt. F. F. de L. Willis. A.S.C. (Cambridge); Lt. R. G. M'Gibbon, R.E. (Dunedin), slightly gassed; 2nd Lt. J. M'G. Morrison. M.C, Middlesex Rgt. : 2nd Lt. R. V. Deacon, M.G.C. (Christchurch). A New Zealander who lately lost his life in action at sea was Petty Officer, 2nd Class, Robert Pollock, R.N., who came from Port Chalmers. He had served for three years in H.M.S. , and was killed on 19th March. MISSING AND PRISONERS. Pte. W. H. Docker, No. 40525, 1/C.1.R., arrived from Germany a few days ago, and has been admitted to No. 1 London General Hospital, Camberwell. When in the list of prisoners he was stated to have had a shrapnel wound in the left arm. The following New Zealanders are now known to be prisoners of war in Germany:—Pte. T. ,E. Eggleston, 2/Ent. 8., 62945 (previously reported missing), location of camp not stated; Rfimn. L. B. Brown, 4/R.8., 53133, who is at Kriegs Stanimlager, LimbuDg-a-Lahn (previously reported missing, believed prisoner of war); L.-Cpl. P. J. Valentino, 1/0.1. R., No. 58942, location not known (previously reported missing). < News has been received that 2nd Lt. D.' G. Laurenson (Cavalry 5.E,.) is a prisoner. He was formerly R.S.M. in the Canterbury M.R., and was discharged from the N.Z.E.F. in January last year for an Imperial commission. A New Sealander posted as missing is Pte. W. Johnson, No. 55987, Welsh Regiment. He beloncs to Christchurch. Lt.-Col. A. C. Corfe, D.5.0., Royal West Kent Regiment, an' old boy of Christ's, is a prisoner in Germany. ,Col. Corfe has two bars to his D.S.O. Lt. G. I. Kirkcaldy, Black Watch, has been posted as missing^frora the early days of the war until last October.. Lt. Kirkcaldy (who belongs to Dunedin) had been in the A.S.C. when he transferred to the Black Watch. He was a student at Cambridge before the war.
