NOTES AND COMMENTS

(IS '-SIR LANCELOT.")

The imported horses Day. Comet and Archiestown were railed through to Auckland to-day. Among those who inspected them during their stay in Wellington were Messrs. Lan Duncan, of the Waikanae Stud, Mr. James Bull, of Huntervllle-, and Mr. H. Hassell, of Hawkes Bay. Seadown, who has been rather a disappointment at the hurdle business, hasi been turned out for a lengthy spell, and will therefore forfeit his engagements at the C.J.C. Meeting. Mr. W. Richmond informs me that St. Elmn will be the only member of his team to compete at the Grand. National Meeting. Almo, who was purchased for jumping races, has been a failure so far, and is to be spelled. J. M. Cameron returned to Hastings after the Wellington Meeting, and left St. Elmn at Trentham until he returns. In a try-out with Merrie Poto at Trentham on Friday morning, Whakatina was seen to advantage. . and the failure of the Provocation geMing in' tho Kia Ora Handicap was a great blow to Ms connections. After seeing his horses shipped South, Mr. James Bull, jun., returned home to-day. Omahu accompanied Colorado and All Over South, an«, m&y be given a run in some of the hack races at Riccarton. Like most of the St. Simon tribe, from which he descends, Omahu is high strung, and his owner considered the travelling and racing might improve him. t / ; T. Higgins, the Opaki trainer, >is at "Trentham with Brown Joe, who will probably be sent South for the hunters' I races at the South Canterbury Meeting.

Mr. H. Hassell, the Hawkes Bay owner and breeder, recently lost the services of the imported horse Merry Moment. Ho has purchased the Well performed Kilbroney horse^ Kilboy, /who arrived from South this morning on his way to Hastings. Pursefiller broke down badly at Trentham and will not race at, Riocarton. Her owner considers it very improbable, that sho will race again: The daughter of Lethe was a. useful performer, and this season won 805 soys. in sta.kes. W. J. Porter is taking Good Hope South for the minor events at the Grand National Meeting. Lady Blade, who has been a great disappointment all' the season,, has been thrown out of training. She is, therefore, unlikely, to fulfil her engagement in the Winter Cup. . I A. J. Shearsby has gone South wdth Sloight-of Hand, Yellow and Black, and Reformation. Nita, did not run as well as expected at: Trentham, and she has-been- sent home. Sleight-of-Hand only ran once at Trentham, while Yellow and Black was not saddled ujj on either I day. The horses named are well enI ga-ged at Riccarton and may win a decent " stake there. After the Wellington Meeting, trainer \V. Hawthorns went up to Opaki and brought back Snub, who is engaged in the Winter Cup. The Martian gelding accompanies his stable mates Wishful, G-ladful, and Multaine South to-night. The imported horse Polydamon, who wag entered for the Winter Cup and Grand National Hurdles, is unlikely to fulfil his engagements at Riccorton. He will probably" take up stud duty in the Poverty Bay district.. He is a goodlooking and \^oll-bred hol'se, and it is only wasting time trying to convert him into a hurdle racer.
