Speakman, late of the HuddartParker Company's service, died at Auckland on Friday. Mr. Speakman v/as well known in Auckland shipping circles and to the travelling public some years .ago when he. was purser on" a number of the company's steamers. When the company opened a branch' office in Auckland Mr. ppeakman was appointed chief and claims clerk, from which position he" retired about a year ago owing to his health failing , Captain Spring-Brown, who came ashore from the Mararoa about a fortnight ago, has taken command of a vessel at Sydney Captain J. G. S. Doorly has taken command of the Te Anau in place of Captain W. -I. S. Eyre ■ .-,.... Mr. N. L. Thomson, second engineer on the Pateena, has signed off that vessel's articles. In view of prob-. able further decrease it behoves the board to i consider'carefully every demand for expendi-I ture, and to exercise the utmost economy." j EXCITING TIME AT SYDNEY j The hulk. Gleaner, loaded with, about 500 tons of.copra, caught fire on the night.of.the., 10th July while berthed at one of the smaller wharves at Sydney. The hulk, Which was an old American three-masted schooner, was ctuir-' tered'by Messrs. Burns, Philp, and. Co., and used for the storage of copra while awaiting shipment. The wharf at which the vessel was lying was a considerable distance from the roadway, and had to bo reached by scaling a precipitous height. The firemen succeeded however in running a uose from a hydrant on tho road down to the wharf, through a defile, and began to attack the fire. The hulk was loaded above the deck as well as in the hold with copfa, and smoke was issuing from the vessel in sucli dense volumes that the firemen had' great difficulty in approaching her. 'it was later realised that it- would be impossible to extinguish the flames, and it was decided to sink the vessel. The damage is estimated at £15,000.

After a stay of eight days at Wellington the schooner Huanui left the port at 11 o'clock yesterday morning for Melbourne With general produce the auxiliary schooner Gisborne left Wellington yesterday morning for Dunedin and Inverc'argill. Tho vessel is in command of Captain llanning, who, on arrival of the Gisborne at Dunedin, will leave the ship and come to Wellington to take charge of the Hula. Owing to the winds met with.at the Heads the vessel anchored in Worser Bay. She Is to leave during the day provided weather conditions are favourable . , Bound from Onehunga to New Plymouth on Tuesday the Earawo was unable to cross the Manokau bar. She returned to port, and' yesterday was unable to leave owing to bad ■weather. The Karawn is now fixed to leave Onehunga this evening for New Plymouth The Opawa was delayed at "Blenheim"yes-! terday afternoon owing to a heavy sea on the Wairau bar In the month of June Calliope Dock, Auckland, was used by ten vessels aggregating 8750 gross tons, the dock being engaged in all for twenty days. In the same period the 600-ton slipway was used by seven vessels aggregating 1299 gross tons, for a total of fourteen days last month three mail steamers, eight intercolonial and island traders, 23 c9iist.ll steamers, one transport, one hospital ship, one oversea 1 sailing vessel, three intercolonial sailing vessels, two coastal sailers, and 397 local coasters entered the port of Auckland, tho total of 441 vessels, aggregating 169,284 gross and 07,002 net. tons (reports the Star).
