WAR LOAN FACTS
COMPULSION BEGINNING
Persons able to invest in the War Loan who have been deferring action as long as possible, are to be taught that there is something behind the repeated threats oi compulsion. The Acting-Minister ol Finance (the Hon. Arthur Myers) states that the first lot of notices was sent out a week ago, but the indications are that the number to be issued will not be large. It is believed thai?*the steps already taken will put speed into the persons who have been hesitating. The Minister remarked that in the year 1917 authority was granted by Parliament for the raising of £28,000,000 for war expenditure. Of this authority there remained at the end of 1917 an amount of £10,229,245. which had not been raised. In March, 1918, a fresh war loan of £9,500,000 was issued by the Treasury, and in response a sum of £10,482,380 had been subscribed. "It will be seen,' therefore," said Mr. Myers, "that after the launching of the £9,500,000 loan, the 1917 authority had been over-subscribed by £253,135. Under the Finance Act, 1918, a fresh i authority of £20,000,000 was granted by the House. It is satisfactory to note that the Treasury has so far been able to provide the necessary funds and preserve | an ample margin in hand to meet unexpected calls which may occur. The Treasury has not ceased to take applications for investments, and will receive offers for investment in the £20,000,000 loan of 1918 should persons have funds at their disposal."
