In regard to the application of the Union Steam Ship Company on- behalf of Alfred D. Shearer, marine engineer, the board reserved its decision sine die. Sine die decisions were given in respect to applications on behalf of 1 the following Departmental officers^ —Ernest Cecil Gage, telegraph engineer, Auckland ; William Henry league, black- \ smith, Mental Hospital, Porirua; Joh» A. A'Court, cadet, Tax Department; Arthur V. Hewitt, clerk, Government Life Insurance office j Alfred Percy King, clerk, Government Life Insura-nce office, Wellington; Herbert W. Todd, Percy H. Challis, John Leonard, John W. Coyle, Charles J. M'Mullin, and(William A. M'Loughlin, prison warders; • Ernest J. Martin, instructor, training ship Amokura; W. J. E. M'lvor, and i James M'Gdfvie, assistant lighthoiise- . keepers^ In respect, to the case of J. A. • A'Court, the Commissioner of Taxes (Mr. D. G. Clark) explained that the staff had been seriously depleted. A'Cotirt's duties WeTe in connection with assessment of income-tax. The Chairman : No doubt the work of your Department has Veiy largely increased. Mf. D. Gt. Clark: Yes, and it is increasing daily. We have not yet finished the assessmehi work for the year end- * ing 31st March, 1918. We are practically nine months behind. Owing to the confidential nature of the work, yrg have to appoint permanent officers. We cannot appoint temporary 1- officers to do such work. The board, as stated, reserved its decision sine die. * The adjourned appeal .ok behalf ol Robert James Murphy, secretary, Island Bay, was agaili bfoflght on, andy after hearing some further evidence, the' board ' dismissed the appeal* and granted leave till the September draft. The secretary of the Seamen's Union . appealed for the exemption <sf the follow ing members of the union : James Hogan. William Tyman, Charles M'Carthyi Charles Waters, Timothy McCarthy, firemen on various steamers; Hectwi Campbell, George A. Sherrington, Mich' ael Campbell, William L. ■ Watson, sea, men.
