Leaving the waters of the Pacific carpeted with-.burning oil for a distance of more than ft mile, the Seattle-built auxiliary schooner Portland, which was burned off the Peruvian coast last January, went to her grave in the depths of the sea after a terrific explosion,' which sent .- .flaming debris skyward and practically destroyed the vessel's upper, works (says an American ' paper). Details of the disaster reached Seattle . on the' 4th May with-the arrival of the Seattle power schooner Ruby, which rescued Captain A. Markusen (master of the Portland)", his wife, and the vessel's officers! and crew off the §puth ■ American coast. The fire, according to tho captain of the Ruby, started in the vessel's eagineroom; and spread to her oil tanks. There j ■was a terrific explosion, and soon the sea for 1 a distance of more than a mile was it seething mass of flames. The captain, officers, and crew „of the, Portland, 21 persons all told, had been ; adrift in the open ocean for more than 48 hours with only a small amount of food and , - water. A curious feature of the disaster , was the fact that not a trace of the Portland , or her cargo of 1,500,000 feet of lumber could be .found a few days after she was burned

THE MAKAMBO DOCKED. \ . The Navigation Department-of New South Wales on the 2nd July conducted a preliminary enquiry into the recent grounding of the Burns, Philp Company's, steamer: Makambo at Lord Howe Island, while op a voyage from the New ' Hebrides to Sydney (reports an Australian ex- - change). The vessel is at present in Mort's dock undergoing repairs. A survey of the „vessel has been made, and it is stated that , over '70 plates will have to be dealt with. The bottom plates on both sides are corrugated, the keel plate bent in two places, sternpost .slightly bent, and plates round the sternpost badly shaken, and rivets loosened. The work of repairing the vessel is expected to occupy about six weeks . ■ According to a special message from Dunedln j to i the Chnstchurch Press, the Union Steam Ship Company has adopted the "Salvus" life jacket, invented by Mrs. Beaumont, the wife of Captain Beaumont, shipping master at Dunedin. . This jacket has commanded a great deal of attention throughout the world, and was adopted by the British Admiralty some time ago. One hospital ship lias been fitted with a certain number of these jackets in New Zea . „ land,, for the, use of cot cases .and the nursing sisters.'- These jackets are Ui&'only ones which ■ a patient can sleep in with comfort. Enquiries are being made by shipping authorities of many countries, including France and Spain, for a supply of the jackets . . The Monowai, which is to re-enter the East Coast service on Monday; next, is at present advertised to leave Wellington for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland on Thursday
