THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(»I "SIR LASOBLOT.")

Gladful scored his first win this season in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham, and added 500 soys to Mr. W. E. Kemball's account.

Apparently the decision of the Manawatu Racing Club, occasioned by the ■Biplane incident, not to receive further nominations from Mr. G-. D. Greenwood has been rescinded. In the list of entries taken for the Palmerston North Stakes and Manawatu Stakes figure several juveniles owned by the Canterbury sportsman.^ The decision in W. ,S. Young's appeal case, heard on Wednesday of last week, has not yet been declared. It may be a week or ten days before it is announced.

Tauira broke down prior io the Wellington Meeting, and probably the wellknown performer, who won the Winter Hurdles in 1909 -with H. Telford in the saddle, has made his last appearance in a race.

F. Tilley had nothing lacing at Trentham, and did not put in an appearance at the meeting. His principal patron, Mr. W. Duncan, was anvong the Wanganui visitors. Messrs L. Harris, H. Hayward, and K. Wynyard were down for Auckland. The West Coast contingent included Messrs. M. Hannan (Greymouth), J. Evans (Westland), and B. P. M'Mahon (Reefton) Messrs. D. H. Roberta, (owner of Fiery Cross), W. J. Phillips (owner of Nobleman), and other prominent owners, put in an appearance. Mr. Jervis George came down from New Plymouth, but has not yet thrown off all the effects of his recent illness. Mr. D. J. Goodwin, of Hawera, who raced Sylvia Park, was among the supporters of Royal Park when he won. Mr. W. Nidd, whose colours were well known in this district when Peroneal and Peronilla were racing, came up from Christchurch to see Moorabbe run.

There has been a big increase in the prize-money offered for distribution at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting, which will total £6850 for the three days. The next Auckland Trotting Cup will be worth £1350 and open to 4.39 horses. This will make it the second most important race of its kind in the Dominion.

Coalition, who is a greatly-improved horse this season, was unlucky enough to fill the rolo of runner-up in both the Great Northern and Wellington Steeplechases. Sir Fisher was also placed second in the Great Northern and Winter Hurdles at the meeting named. Mr. Angus Keith, the well-known starter, was among the visitors to Trentham this week. He has been asked to officiate at the Spring Meeting of the Dannevirke "Racing Club. Albert Gardiner, brought Hyginas down from Waverley, but he was not started on account of a bereavement in the owner's family. . Master Strowan ha# won four races this season and 2425 soys in stakes. Had he raced before Wanganui he would probably have added the principal ■steeplechase event at the meeting named to his owner's account.

Handicaps for the Grand National Hurdles and Steeplechase and Winter Cup are duo on Friday. The official estimate of the best known performers in the jumping races will be inwstesting. The handicapper may find some difficulty in' bringing the best and worst together in a three-stone radius in the Steeplechase., In the , July Steeplechase at Trentham to-day Master Strowan was asked to concede some of his opponents as'much as 3.3. The nearest to him are Waimai (91b), Bon Keve (171b), Sleight-of-Hand (201b), Crib, Coalition, and Collector • (201h). Since the beginning of the jumping-season the position has somewhat altered. At Wanganui Crib was asked to concede weight to Master Strowan, and at Auckland Waimai was placed above ,the Wellington Steeplechase winner. In the Century Hurdles at Wanganui, Sleight-of-Hand was placed 81b above Gladful and 101b above Sir Fisher, who had to concede Bon Eeve 51b. The Great Northern weights were practically pound, for pound at Wanganui. At, Hastings, Sleight-of-Hand and Sir Fisher were on the same mark, and the latter was placed above Gladful and Art. In the Winter Hurdles at Trentham the last-named was top weight, while Sir Fisher was asked to concede Gladful 81b. In the Final Hurdles, run to-day, Gladful, Sir Fisher, and Sleight-of-Hand were all placed on the same mark. The Messrs. White, descendants of the late Hon. James White, are among the best-known breeders in New South Wales. At the Stead dispersal sale in 1908 Mr. W. E. White gave 4500 guineas for Golden Slipper, but she has so far not- produced anything worth putting into training. Another member of the family, Mr. B. R. White, of Merton, imported Flavus, whose death was announced in yesterday's issue. The son of Hampton was a. stud success, and this season his list was full at 100 gns. Flavus was a good performer on the English turf. Since he took up stud duty in New South Wales he sired a lot of winners. They included Aurifer and Flavinius, Caulfield Cup winners, The Fortune Hunter, winner of the Sydney Cup, Aurafodina, a weight-for-age winner, and many others.
