THE LIQUOR TRAFFIC
CLERGYMAN'S GRAVE CHARGES.
SYDNEY, 12th July. The Rev. Mr. Hammond, giving evidence^ before the Senate Committee whichls enquiring into the drink traffic, stated that considerable numbers of men from inebriate homes were allowed to enlist and were sent overseas. Sometimes after having been discharged for drunkenness they re-enlisted * several times. The bulk of them were sent back without having fired a shot, and became a charge as returned soldiers upon the-public funds. He also declared that a growing evil was the absent soldiers' wives spending their husbands' pay on drink.
