MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Several first offending inebriates were dealt with in the.Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. L. G. Eeid, S.M.
In addition to a charge of drunkenness, Bryda Sheehan' was also said to have loitered in piyde lquay for the purpose of prostitution. The accused, who is an old offender, vehemently denied the charge, but the evidence left little room for -doubt. In respect of the charge which was laid under the War Regulations the accused was sent to prison for one month, while the penalty for drunkenness was fixed at 10s, with the usual alternative. , '
An echo of a recent theft case was heard when a young girl appeared in, the dock. When previously before the Court the girl was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that she remained in the' Salvation Army Home. This she had failed to do.. The Magistrate made a similar order, the condition being that the defendant went to live with her sister and behaved herself properly.
Clarence Moore, who did not appear personally, was fined 20s, with costs, for making use of improper language on the King's Wharf; .contrary to the Harbour Board -bylaws. The alternative of payment was fixed at seven days' imprisonment. ■'■'■■
On a charge of driving a motor-car at an excessive speed round the corner from Willis-street to Lambton-quay, • Lionel Edwards was fined 10s, with: 7s costs.
Charged that, being_ the driver of &]\ vehicle, and not being in constant attend- )\ ance while the vehicle was on the stand,; Douglas Wilkins was fined 10s, with, cc»to. .. "' '.''';
For failing to register his dog, Henry' Mitchell was fined ss, with costs. j A breach of the Eastbourne Borough, by-IaWB was alldged against Catherine E. ■ Reditt, who was fined 10s, with costs. A fine of ss, with costs, wae imposeds in the case of John Rendall Johnson, who., admitted his failure to notify an accident to the Inspector of Scaffolding. ■■■'"■ .
