MAYORAL INSTALLATION
The installation of the Mayor will take place on Wednesday next, 2nd May, just a week after the day on which the election was held. This interval is fixed by statute, and in the opinion of the Returning Officer (Mr. James Ames) should be considerably extended. " The swearing-in must take place in the presence of the council, yet even with extraordinary expedition- on the part of the Returning Officer and his staff, it is very difficult to complete the checks which are necessary before the council can be declared elected.. In the recount the name of every person voting has to be called, and all the rolls used at the different booths have to be checked, so as to see that there has been no dual voting. Mr. Ames considers that at least a fortnight should be allowed for, this work. Returning officers at Parliamentary elections, where the process is infinitely simple in comparison, have no such rush task to cope with.
