GRAVE SITUATION
CAUSED BY THE SUB-
MARINES
DANGER OF FAMINE CONDITIONS IN BRITAIN ENEMY'S EFFORTS AT THE MAXIMUM. (UNHID PBJBS ASSOCIATION.—COPYEIOBT.) (ACSTRAUAN-NBW ZEALAND CASLB ASSOCIATION.) (Received April 27, 2 p.m.) LONDON, 26th April. The food situation is undeniably grave. There is a danger of famine conditions unless consumption is immediately, curtailed. The public is being prepared to expect privations in the near future. Tha general opinion is that food tickets are imperative. The enemy is now reaching the maximum of his efforts to starve the Allies. All the Austrian and German submarines with the exception of those needed for defence purposes are engaged on tha trade routes. There is little indication o£ a reduction of the danger during the" summer, when the longer period of daylight will be favourable to the submarines.
