CLYDE-QUAY SCHOOL

In its 27th annual report, the committee of the Clyde-quay School makes feeling reference to tho resignation of Mr. W. T. Grundy, the headmaster. Tho Education Board, it adds, appointed Mr. W. H. Foster to fill the vacancy, "and we are all looking forward to a happy and successful torm under Mr. Foster. Another loss which the sohool had sustained was the departure of the assistant-master, M". J. E. Thwaites, who has done yeoman service for the last eleven and a-half years." The headmaster had repeatedly spoku in terms of tho highest praise of Mr. Thwaites'B work. Those members of the staff who went away at tho call of country to fight its battle arc still at the front, with tho exception of Mr. A. East, who is now at home' after suffering severely from honourable wounds sustained in tho fighting in:-France. To Mr. Fossetto' and Mr.. Dempsoy tho committee also offered its congratulations and best wishes. As to tho work of the school, tho committee mentions that a National Scholarship was obtained by Minnie Forsyth, a pupil of the schooi; 77 gained their proficiency certificates, and 10 gained competency certificates. Thero are now 759 names on the roll, with *n average attendance o! 731. In justice to the householders, tho oommitteo wish to emphasise the fast that the headmaster has been compelled to refuse admission to a number of ohildren of the district on account of tho overcrowded etato of the school buildings. "The fact that 93 children have been refused admission speaks for itself."
