ST. MARY'S, KARORI

The annual report of the churchwardens of St. Mary's Church, Karori, states that although the regular Sunday offertories, which should be the mainstay of the parish finance, show only a small increase (Is lOd per Sunday), the special offertories, which are for work' outside the parish, show a very praiseworthy increase. During the previous year these amounted to £54, but for tho year just closed they amounted to £95. This result was largely owing to the monthly collections at the intercessory services for distribution to New Zealand soldiers by the New Zealand Army chaplains at the front. 7.'hese collections account for £31. That so large a portion of the parish income as £95 shijuld be subscribed for mission, social, and charitable work outside of its own. boundaries is worthy of commendation. Another very satisfactory feature in th& accounts is the paying of the mortgage on the vicarage. The balance of the money borrowed to build the vicarage fell due in January, and was paid off by £350 lent by the Makara Church Committee from its New Church Fund and £100 raised by the Ladies' Guild at a very successful sale of work. The actual cash in hand at the end of the year was sufficient to pay all accrued interest and a few accounts, leaving the net indebtedness of the vestry, £350 to the Makara Church building account. Including this amount the Makara Committee has £450 in hand towards about £750 required for a new church there. The great outstanding event of the past year was the jubilee of the parish and the consecration of the church, which was commemorated by the erection of a email brass plate. There has been an alteration in the boundaries of the parish. After an arrangement between the vestry of Island Bay and ourselves, the Standing Committee detached that part of the parish situated in the city of Wellington lying between the City Boundary and Ohiro-road, and added it to the Island Bay district. It being distant from the church it could not readily be reached, and lay conveniently to Island Bay. The vestry of Island Bay was willing and anxious to provide services for the new settlers now residing there. The architect has now finished the design and plans of the completed church, and it is expected that these will be available for exhibition in the Church Hall in a few days. The thanks of the vicar, churchwardens, and vestry are due, and are hereby conveyed, to the Ladies' Guild for its handsome contributions to the parish funds, to tho choirrraster, organists and choir for their-services, and to the lay readers, church decorators, the C.E.M.S., Sunday school superintendent and teachers, and all others who have helped in the work of the parish during the past year.
