MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

MAYORALTY OF CHRISTCHURCH

"A VICTORY FOR, THE DOMINION."

(BI TELEGRAPH.—PIE3B ASSOCIATION.)

CHRISTCHUKCH, April. Mr. H. Holland, who was re-elected Mayor of Christchurch in the contest with Mr. J. M'Combs, M;P., tho anticonscriptionist, has received a sheaf of telegrams from all over , New Zealand, congratulating him. on his splendid • victory obtained in the contest for the Mayoralty. The telegrams were from (among others) the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways, the Hon. G. W. Bussell, Minister of Internal Affairs, and the M-ayore of Auckland, Wellingfton, and Dunedin. "The substance of the telegrams," aiftid Mr. Holland to a reporter to-day, "is that the victory is looked upon as having a very much wider effect than can be applied to local elections. It is regarded as 8 victory for the Dominion, and a backing-np of the Government's policy in applying the Military Service Act."

The total number of votes cast for city councillors was 16,770, or, roughly, about 1000 less than was cast at the Mayoral election. This made the quota necessary" to ensure election to the City Council 987, and riieana that the following six candidates obtained the necessary number of first preference votes to elect them •. —J. W. Beaniand. (Citizens), A^ S. Taylor (Citizen^), D. 6. Sullivan (Labour), H. G. Bl£ M.P. (Independent), J. A. Flesher,, (Citizens), F. Bnrgoyne (Labour).
