LONDON, 27th February.

General Godley has, nominated the following for temporary commissions in the Royal Artillery:—Q.M.S. Artificer D. C. Inglis, 2/115, 'N.Z.A.0.C.; Sergt, J. Martin, 2/1004, N.Z.F.A. ;L.-Cpl. W. F. Kent Johnston, 4/553 ; y Sapper L. G. Mahon,. 6/3223, Divisional Signal Company; C.S.M. A. Bovil, 4/657; Q.M.S. W. E. Wilson, 4/260, N.Z.E.

Pte. J. R. Quarton; 9/965, of the Otago Regiment, who was nominated for a commission in August, has completed his cadet course and been promoted 2nd lieutenant. Sergt. H. Foote, 4/412, N.Z.E., has also been promoted. He was nominated in October.

Rear-Admiral Sir William Pakenham, C.8., who was second in command of the battle-cruiser fleet under (Admiral Beatty, has been promoted to command the battle-cruisers. Admiral Pakenham hitherto 'carried his flag in the Australia, but was in the New Zealand at the battle of Jutland. He was for many years nayal attache at Tokio, "and was on board Admiral Togo's flagship during the Russo-Japanese War. He commanded armoured cruisers early in this war, and was previously Fourth Sea Lord. It was recently stated that Admiral Pakenham was appointed to command the Australian Navy, but this is apparently wrong. ' Capt. F. G. Massey,.N.Z.R.B., son of the Prime Minister, acted for a while as staff-captain of the Ist Infantry Brigade. • ' Thei following officers have been transferred to the N.Z. Camel Corps -.—Lieut. H C. Cumming, Auckland Regiment, is returning, to New Zealand on duty. Major R. C. Allen has been promoted to command one of the Auckland battalions in succession to Brigadier-General C. H. J. Brown.

2nd Lieut. E. W. Mereweather has been, transferred from the Otago Regiment to the Wellington Regiment. Capt. A. H. Garrington, N.Z.S.C., who has been attached to'the 3rd Battalion, NiZ.R.B., is transferred to the Ist Battalion. Lieut. G. A. Bush and 2nd Lieut. G. A. Fromm have returned to duty from New Zealand to remain attached to the Rarotonga Company. . ;

Capt. C. E. May, A.S.C., is now canteen officer on the Reserve Group at Sling. Capt. A. L. Linger (Gisborne), who has completed a. year's service with the R.A.M.C., has now been taken on the strength of the N.Z.E.F. Capt. J. 0. Veitch,.M.D. (Norsewood), Lieut. A. W. Owen Johnston, M.8., and Lieut. H. H. Baxter, M.8.» have been taken on the strength of the N.Z.M.C. Capts. W. H; Simpson (Christchurch), D. G. Matheson (Wellington), and J. A. M'Donell (Hastings) have been transferred to tthe N.Z. roll on acount of ill health contracted oil service. *

Conductor C. J. Gossage, 9/39, of.the N.Z. Army Ordnance Corps, has been promoted 2nd lieutenant. Lieut. H. P. Goodman,' R.E., is a New <Zealander who was in the Civil Service, stationed at Suva, when war was declared. He joined the. Ist Fiji Contingent, and came to England, transferring subsequently to the Royal 'Engineers as a sapper. . In March last he was granted his commission. Lieut. P. K. CampTißll/ Royal 'Highlanders, has been promoted _ captain. He has seen considerable service, since the beginning of the war. 2nd Lieut. W. N. Spragg, R.F.C. (Auckland), has been confirmed in his appointment. ' : Lance-CpL D. M. Gilray, W.M.R., who recently took his discharge to take a commission in the Imperial Army, has been appointed 2nd Lieut, in the Herts Yeomanry

LONDON, 13th March. ■ Captain H. H. Dean (Wellington), of the Dorset Regiment, has been appointed an officer of a company of gentlemen cadets at the Royal Military College. Captairi Dean, who was a student of Victoria College was wounded in Mesopotamia . towards the end of 1915, and was again invalided in the middle of last year. . , ' The many ■ friends - of Mr, Vincent "Ward, second son of Sir Joseph Ward, will be glad to hear that he has at length ' obtained a commission in . the R.N.V.R. Mr. Ward was in Canada when war broke out, and about that time had a nervous 'break down due to over work. He has endeavoured on several occasions to get a commission in the Army, and was for some time in an. 0.T.C., but was again put on 'the sick list. He is now an assistant paymaster in the R.N.V R. ■ . Lieut. Gladstone, Ward, A.S.C., Sir Joseph Ward's third son, left last week for an Eastern theatre, probably Mesopotamia. _ Sub-Lieut. J. _S. Scrivener, R.N.R., Dunedin, is now in one of the fast antisubmarine patrol ships. He was married on Saturday to his cousin, Mrs. Thompson, widow of the late Sub-Divisional Inspector Thompson, of Paddington Green Station. Lieut. Scrivener served through Gallipoli in the N Z.E.F. and again in France, before being transferred! to the R.N.R. He was previously an officer in the U.S.S. Co.

Lieut. A. B. Sizer, 8.N.R., is now in an armed liner, and Sub-Lieut. E. J. Hatfield is now in the . "They are both old officers of the U.S.S. Co., and were transferred from the N.Z.E.F. Sergt. B. A. Woods, A.M.R., 13/228,, now has a' commission, in the British Armoured Car Squadron, R.N.V.R. Mr. A. J. M'Elroy (Feilding) has since October, 1915; been in the Imperial Army with the mechanical transport, and he saw service in the Far East. He is at present in London. Porteous (Dunedin), who has been attached to the R.A.M.C. for the past year, has now transferred to the N.Z.M.C, with the number 3/2935. Dr. Porteous was at one time senior medical officer at the Presbyterian Hospital, Punjab. He has now the'rank' of cantain.

Spr. G. D. Otterson, 4/117 a, N.Z. Engineex's, has been 'discharged medically unfit. He arrived from New Zealand last year for special treatment, which has made amputation of a leg unnecessary, arid he is hoping at no distant date to get back to Rhodesia, where he has a farm. He is a^son of Mr. H. Otterson, for many years Clerk to the House of Representatives. ■'Miv'Cr. D. Otterson will still for some ; months have to undergo electric and massage treatment, and he will probably always be a little lame, but the thigh seems now to be quite right; ' ■"■'' '

Second-Lieut. S. 0. Burleigh, who was commissioned to the Royal Field Artillery in July,. 1915, has relinquished his appointment on being transferred to the New Zealand Forces.

C. W. Clark, 6/2977, N.Z.E., who transferred to the R.N.R. last month, is now Engineer sub-lieutenant, with seniority 26th . February.

Capt. M. E. Lindsay, D.S.O. (Dragoon Guards) has been lieutenant-colonel of the Durham Light Infantry, but relinquishes that acting rank on ceasing to command a battalion.

While flying .near Dorking, Surrey, a few days ago,'in foggy conditions, Capt. A de> Bathe Brandon, M.C., D.5.0., Royal Plying Corps (Wellington), had the misfortune to strike the top of a tree, with the result that he crashed to earth and sustained serious fractures of the right leg. Capt. Brandon was taken to a hospital in the vicinity, and satisfactory progress is reported.

Second-Lieut. W. N. Spragg, R.F.C. (Auckland), has been appointed an equipment officer, 3rd Class. He had a fall in the middla of last year while flying, and damaged the sinews of his shoulders.

Lieut. H. D. Williams, Auckland Mounted Rifles, has been attached to the Royal Flying Corps for some months past, with the rank of lieutenant.

Mr. A. G. Jennings (New Plymouth), son of Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., has a commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers on the completion of his training course with an O.T.C. at Gails, Ayr^ shire! He was previously with the Main Body, IN.Z.E.F., and invalided with concussion) .

1 Sergt. N. S. Hyslop (Hastings), Wellington M.R., has just completed his instruction course for the Royal Flying Corps, and has received his commission as 2nd lieutenant. -He has been posted to a war station in Scotland, the commander of which is Major J. J. Hammond, of Palmerston North, one of the earliest exponents of flying in New Zealand. ■ . ' ,'...•.

Mr. J. E. Nathan, son of Mr. D. J. Nathan (Wellington), has returned to England after. serving for more _ than a year as a driver in the Ist British Red Cross unit on the Austrian front in Italy. Mr. Nathan came to England in 1915 by way of Canada and the United States, and after trying unsuccessfully to get into the armoured cars and other branches, he joined up with the British Red Cross., He went to Italy in October, 1915, and has seen his service there almost entirely in the Gorizia zone. Since the advance on the Carso the headquarters of the 1 unit have been in Gorizia itself, which, is. a very .handsome and fashionable summer' resort.'. Mr. Nathan was recently awarded the Italian War Medal for dressing wounded in the fire trenckss. He has returned to England •with the object of getting special medical advice. The unit to which he has been attached is commanded by Mr. G. M. Trevelyan, who is probably the greatest living authority on recent Italian history. There are about 90 cars in the unit, chiefly Buicks and Fiats. Major G- Barclay, N.Z.E (Auckland), has been on a short leave in London for the purpose of meeting Mrs. Barclay, who arrived by the Ruahine. L.-Cpl. 0. W. Homer, 3/1166, has left the N.Z.E.F. to take a commission.'in the -Royal Flying Corps. A late casualty list contains the name of Capt. H, S. Hurle; : wounded. Capt. Hurle is a New Plymouth man who has his commission in the Middlesex Regt., but is attached to the Royal Fusiliers. Second-Lieut. W. B. Busby, 12th Worcestershire Regt., whose death was officially announced ' a few days ago,' did seven months' garrison duty at Samoa, and came to England about the middle of .1915. He belonged to the firm of Clere and Busby, architects, Wellington, and was the son of Mrs. Busby (Napier). . ",-..■■ Major J. B. Ariell, N.Z. Mounted Rifles (formerly captain North Auckland Mounted Rifles), is now attached to the Royal West Surrey Regt.,.with the. rank of- major. Two more New Zealanders now transferred to the R.N.R. are : Fitter J. lei C. Morgan (18594,- N.Z.F;A.), and L.-Cpl. W. N. Sullivan, 4/171 a. > Quite a number of New Zealanders who have arrived for motor-boat patrol duty have just been gazetted to commissions as sub-lieutenants, R.N.V.R.
