NOTES AND COMMENTS
(17 "SIR LANCELOT.")
The Manawatu Racing Club has decided to apply for 16th and 17th May as the dates for its postponed Autumn Meeting.
Sir. George Morse, the well-known handicapper, underwent an operation in a private hospital at Auckland on Tuesday last. His condition is causing his friends some anxiety. A Petone correspondent -wants to know the biggest dividend ever paid at a meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. Perhaps some of the readers of this column can supply the information required. We were advised by cable yesterday that Mr Wilfred Stead, owner of Slftrill, Sasanof, and Co., was represented at a thoroughbred stock sale held in Melbourne. His purchase at the sale of the •late Mr. J. N. M'Arthur's racehorses and stud was tho two-year-old chestnut filly Cerinthia (sister to'Brigend), by Wallace ■—Seria (sister to Maltine), by Maltster. She is a stoutly-bred^youngster. Maltine won the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, Craven Plate, and -over £10,000 in stakes. Maltine is a daughter of Loch Lava, by Lochiel—Lava, sister to Strom■boli, winner of the A.J.C. Derby and Sydney Cup. Prunelle, who fetched 2600 guineas, is quite a young mare. She was bred in England in 1912 by Neil Oow from Prune, by Persimmon from Treasure by Bend Or—Bonny Jean, by Macaroni—Bonny Agnes. She has a brown colt foal by Wallace, and was served by Trafalgar. Lady Victoria, who fetched 1950 guineas, is a brown maro, bred in England in 1911, by St. Prusquin from Lady Cynosure (sister to Polymclus) by Cyllene—Maid Marian (dam of Grafton). At the sale of English thoroughbreds at Sydney this month a colt by Santoi—Lady Cynosure fetched 1000 guineas. Lady Victoria has a chestnut filly by Wallace and served by Trafalgar. Macadam, who fetched 1700 guineas, is a two-year -old chestnut colt by Wallace—Cross Roads (imp.) by Minting from Hari Kari, by Marcion—Suicide, by Hermit. Macadam won the V.B.C. Gibson Carmichael Stakes. .
Roumania, who proved such a, good mudlark at the Pahiatua and Woodlands meetings early in the season, was among the winners at Greymouth on Tuesday.
The \ nominations, received for th« Autumn Meeting of . the Marlborough Racing Club, cancelled on account of the strike, were well up to the average. The smallest were ten, in the Vavasour Welter and Farewell Handicaps. Porinia, Trentham, Wairarapa, and Awapuni stables were represented. Kilboy (winner of the A.J.C. Derby), The Toff (winner of tlhe Canterbury Derby), and Sasanof (winner of the Great Northern Derby) are engaged in the Hawkes Bay Cup,] run over the Derby distance. Kilboy is a oolt and the other pair geldings. It will be interesting to see how Mr. Coyle handicaps them. This is the first time .the three of them' have been handicapped at a mile and a-half. In the Great Autumn Handicap Kilboy and Sasanof were both handicapped at 8.10 by Mr. Henrys. Kilboy won, but Sasanof did not start.
The Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting will be, held on the dates originally fixed, 24th and 26th May. The form ehown by the Wairarapaowncd Three at the A.J.C. Autumn Meeting went to bear 'out the statement made by the writer before the meeting that ho is just good enough, with the -weights ho is asked to carry, to get beaten in. handicap events,' and ia not class enough for weight-for-age events. Racing him out every time has not proved profitable. Last winter he found Hopfield a worthy opponent. This season he has met a smart galloper in La Steppe (Latino— Steppo). At Hawkesbury on 31st March La Steppe carried top weight (9.5) in the Flying Handicap, and won in lmin 14Jsec. In the High Weight Handicap (8.0 minimum) a,t the A.J.C. Meeting La Steppe had 11.4 and Three 10.10.- Neither horse started, but Three ran unplaced in the Doncaster Handicap, one mile, thy same day. In the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, on the second day, they were both placed on the same mark with 9.2. La Steppe won and Three ran third. In the Denman Stakes, six furlongs, Tun at City Tattersalls Meeting on Saturday last, La Steppe was top weight with 9.10, conceding Three 71b. . Three had a somewhat similar experience last autumn. In the High Weight Handicap, six furlongs, Three (9.13) and Welkin Queen (9.7), another three-year-old Welkin, ran third and fourth. la the Flying Handicap Three had to concede Welkin Queen a stone, and was beaten half a length. They met again in the Deman Stakes, which Three (8.12) won, Welkin Queen (8.2) being in third place.
