WORK DONE DURING 1916

SOME INTERESTING FIGURES.

The work'done in, and. the condition of, the primary schools in the Wellington district during 1916 is referred to at length by the Inspectors in their annual report to the Education Board.

The total number of schools in active | operation at the end of the yeav was 168, | together with ten side schools, making 178 in all. During the year a new (aided) school was opened at Lowlands, | and the schools at Akitio, Pori, and j Pencarrow were reopened. The Native , School at Okautete was inspected I for the first time. Three schools were j closed, namely, Akatarawa, Mangapari, j and Whakaponi. A side school was ' opened at Worser Bay, and the Rose- i neath Side School was transferred to new buildings at Ilataitai. On summarising the inspection arid examination reports the inspectors gauge the efficiency of the schools as follows :— Satisfactory to Very Good 145- ' Fair • 17 Inferior 7 | With two exceptions tho schools which ■ are' classed as less than satisfactory are in Grades O, 1., or 11. The two exceptions arc in Grade 111. In the majority of the weaker schools their condition is largely due to frequent changes of teachers.
