Colonel J. G. Hughes—"Jackie" he is affectionately termed by his friends-*----aften making a, soldierfy speech, brief and to the point, at tlfdkArizac dinner, ■was called upon for a, song. After thinking for a moment, ho announced that he would sing "On the Ball," and big. decision was greeted with an enthusiasm which indicated that he had sung the ditty to the accompaniment of bursting shrapnel. Before commencing, he axplained that football was good training for soldiers. It taught them to take hard hits and come up smiling. It was this feature which was goinc; to win, tho war. (Loud applause.) Colonel Hughes then sang about chasing the leather over tho landscape, and the large crowd of returned soldiers made the welkin, ring when it came to the ohonu.
