' The retirement, owing to ill-health, of Mr.. R. H. Pope, Inspector of Industrial Schools, is announced by the Public Service Journal, which states that he 'Is another of the" longrservice 1 officers who, on account of. their integrity and standing in the Service; can ill be spared. The Journal' adds :—"'Mr. Pope was in his thirty-fourth year of service, the full terra having been spent in the Education Department, which he joinld as a. cadet in May, 1883. For many years •he has been exclusively engaged in that, section of the Department's activities which relates to the care and- upbringing of neglected, delinquent, deaf, blind, and feeble-minded children.' Ho has been largely responsible for the present effective organisation of this particular portion of the State's burden. His health for the past year' or two has been the cause of concern .'to his fellow-officers arid friends, and has prevented to a certain extent- his clpse ■ application to 'the work which all in touch With him knew to be his great enthusiasm. A protracted sea voyage in the middle- of last year did 1 something to restore him, but his. medical advisers suggested that he should not continue .to apply himself to the cares of office. Early this year, therefore, he retired on superannuation. He was presented by his fellow-workers with a substantial recognition of their feelings towards him I,' and 1 parted from them -with a full knowledge that- it was their universal .desire that, a change of environment arid rest from Departmental .duties.'would soon rehabilitate his health. Mr. Pope has the respect "ia.nd v/ellwlshes of the army-'of Public Servants to whom he. was so well known, and the association, of which he was a keen member, has pleasure in being able to assure .them that, already, he' is feeling the benefits'of relaxation ..from-official life."
