RELIEVING THE PRESSURE ON RUMANIA

(Australian-New Zealand Cable Association.) (Received October 13, 8.40 a.m.) ROME, 12th October. The offensive was preceded by a five-days' intense artillery bombardment and great aerial activity. As a result of Hie fighting the Anstrfens suffered the heaviest reverse since General Cadorna's offensive early in August. T,he weather recently has made progress most difficult. The Duke of Aosta commanded the attacking army, which was tha same as covered it-

self with glory at Gorizia. The assaults resulted in capturing several elabor-ately-fortified lines, and bringing the Italian front within thirteen miles of Trieste. General Cadorna's push is further proof of the unity of the Allies, and is intended to assist Rumania, who is hard pressed in Transylvania, also to prevent Austria reinforcing the Lemberg front.
