A correspondent signing himself "W.P." complains in a letter to The Post that only one vessel in port, the Blenheim, flew a flag at half-mast on Monday out of respect to the three men who were unfortunately drowned in the wreck of the Stormbird. "W.P." considers that "captains and officers of the 'mosquito' fleet should have shown some sympathy and respect to the three unfortunate men who lost their lives.". On enquiry by a Post reporter it was learned that the usual practice is that vessels belonging to a company which has lost a ship, attended by loss of life, should fly their flags at half-mast. This, however, does not extend to other shipping companies unless the loss of life is regarded as a national calamity. The Blenheim was the only vessel belonging to the company in port on Monday, and she flew flags at half-mast. It should also be remembered that the hoisting of flags in port is governed by the owners of vessels, and generally permission has to be granted before flags can be flown.
