The death is -announced of Mr. Robertj W. Bobinson, a very old settler in thej Otahuhu district.

Mr. Georgfe^ Wilson, a member of thei' Supplies Board of Advice, returned to| Wellington in the Riverina this week,! after a holiday in Australia.

The Rev. H. N. Roberts, yicar of Sfcj John's, Woolston, has received hotic^ of his appointment as chaplain to th«j17th Reinforcements.

Mr. A. P. Bennett, formerly of thej Dannevirke and Rotorua Post and Tel<_-[ graph Offices, has been promoted to the; secretary's office, Wellington.

Mr. R. Mudford, a progressive settler in the Feilding. district, is dead. The death is also, announced pf Mr. Wm.j C. Boyd, a very old resident of the towaj of Feilding.

The Hon. Alfred Deakin, ex-Primej Minister of Australia, arrived' in Auckland by the Makura front Sydney on] Monday. Frear, a former Governor of the /.Hawaiian Gipup, who hs_s been touring Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, and who will visit places of interest in New Zealand ; Dr. Miller, Government Geologist, Toronto; and Mr.( T. F. Sutherland, chief inspector ofj mines, Toronto, and a-member of thej Canadian Nickoi Commission.

The funeral of the late Mr. Joint Reith yesterday was well attended. Ai short service was conducted by the Rev.| 3. Gumming. Six members of the session, of the Khandallah Presbyterian Church acted as pall-bearers. The late .ir.J Roith had been for many years a prominent member of that church. Ha regularly occupied the pulpit at both thej Khandallah and Johnsonville Churches,; and took an active interest in all branches of the Church work. Tn all matters affecting tlie interests of the borough in which he lived, he also took) the keenest interest, and his death is a distinct loss to the district. Wid'e-j spread sympathy is felt for his wife) and daughters.

The death occurred in Auckland ou Monday of Captain John M'Kenzie, aj well-known local master mariner, agcdj 65. Deceased, who was tlie 'son of _a( shipmaster, was born in Nova Scotia,: and came to New Zealand with his parents when he was a boy. His father] was one of tho founders of the Waipnj Settlement, Auckland. Young M'Kcnzid went to sea at. an early age and was ia the employ of the M'Gregor Shipping Company, the Coastal Steamship Conn pany, and the Northern Steamship Coni-i pany at different times.. Captain M'Kciii zie, who was a prominent Presbyterian' in Auckland, is survived by one son, Mr, J. M. M'Kenzie, LL.B., who left New Zealand as an' assistant-chaplain, but who lately offered himself for duty ia the firing-Lino. There are also three uu-i married daughters.
