BURGLARIES IN THE CITY
There has been a recrudescence of daylight robberies in Wellington, and among the houses entered during the week was that of the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, M.L.C., in Levy-street, off Majoribanks-street. In this case the burglar, or burglars apparently gained access to the house during the absence of the occupants, and succeeded in making off with about £20 worth of jewellery, mostly the property of Miss Mary Aitken, niece of Mr. Aitken. Miss Aitken had been careful to conceal most of her jewellery, but the burglar, who was apparently a practised hand at the business, succeeded in locating it. In another case the house of Mrs. Peters, in Hawker-street, was broken into, and a gold watch and gold bangle, owned by Miss Peters, taken from a drawer. Evidently the marauder, who entered by a back window, was surprised, for the next' drawer, which contained several valuables, had not been interfered with. It is reported that other houses have also been visited of late, and people would be well advised to take every precaution when leaving their places unguarded.
