WORKERS' DWELLINGS

YEAR'S WORK IN WELLINGTON,

The activities of the Workers' Dwellings Board in Wellington during 'the past year are summarised in the annual report of the Labour Department, Wellington Branch. There are, the report states, 93 workers' dwellings in Wellington and Petone; 6 are in course of erection at Taitville, and tenders are about to be called for a further batch of 11. During the year blocks of land were purchased at Maranui and Kilbirnie, and already all the sections on these blocks have been applied for. The occupants of the dwellings (both purchasers and tenants) are carrying out their liabilities in a satisfactory manner. The collection of instalments and rents by the Department has added considerably to the duties connected with the scheme. Since'-this work was taken over by the Department eleven months ago £3200 has been collected by the office. A considerable portion of the arrears outstanding when the work was taken over has also been recovered.
