Mr...Justice Edwards, who has been ill with pleurisy, was well enough to preside at a short session of .the Supreme Court in Palmerston North to-day.

Mr. 'George Frost is unable to accede to a request to become a candidate for the Wellington urban area on the Educa tion Board.

The death is announced of Mr. Alex. Stephen, of Waikiekie, Auckland aged eighty-two. He arrived from Scotland over fifty years ago. . ■ ..'

Mr. C. Houklsworth, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, arrived in Wellington by the Maori from Lyttelton this morning.

At last night's meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Football Association, Mr.. A. CKerr, assistant secretary and treasurer, was presented with a token of esteem on the occasion of his approaching marriage.

The j only, relative he has in the Dominion is Private H. Pickering, who is ' now in camp at Trentham with the 14th Reinforcements.

Captain Leo Myers, formerly a well- ' known citizea of Auckland, and a brother of the Hon. Arthur Myers, left England for "the .front some six weeks ago as captain in command of a company of 250 men.in the 60th Regiment of the King's ftlriyal Rifles.' .It will be remembered •"■that Captain Myers enlisted as a private, sixteen months ago, in;the 2nd Sportsmen's Battalion (now the 24th Royal Fusiliers) and has worked hard to achieve his present rank. > "

. A farewell, which . took the form of a concert, was given at Kaiwarra last evening to Cpl. . Hendle, Pte. Wainwright, and Tprs. W. Crowe and E. Flaws, who are leaving with the Reinforcements. The Wellington Pipe Band, of which Cpl. Hendle was a member before joining .the ' Colours, was in attendance during the evening. The playing of. this band was much appreciated by the audience, '■. as were other musical items given by . Mrs. ■■; Maries, Misses Munro, E. Flaws, . G.; Z. Flaws, and "Messrs.-It. E. Flaws, N.Wainwright, :;S. Fraser, A. Short, and J. Simpson. vAn appropriate address was given by jMr. A. W. Palmer (chairman of • the j Kaiwarra Patrioticl Society), who moved • a motion expressing regret at the death of Lord Kitchener. This motion was .carried, in silence, all those present ' standing." On behalf of the Kaiwarra residents, Mr. J. E. Fitzgerald (who presided over the meeting) presented each of the guests with a small token'oE friendship, and expressed the wish that they would soon be able to return to -New Zealand. The -recipients briefly thanked 'the donors, and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. !/
