DEATH OF MR. W. MOWBKAY

' By the..death of Mr. William Mowbray, which occurred this morning, the Lower Hutt loses one of its most respected residents. The deceased gentleman, who was in his 81st year, was born at Leicester," England, where he was educated for a time under Canon Fry, afterwards going to St. Mark's College, Chelsea, for three years. In 1856 lie entered the teaching profession and taught for two and a-half years in his native city. While so engaged he accepted an offer to become master of the Anglican School in Sydney-street, Wellington; and he arrived here by the ship Midlothian in 1859. He conducted the school with great success, and whenit was taken over by the Board of Education he was retained as its headmaster. Subsequently the school was .known as the Thorndon School. Mr. Mowbray -was an able teacher, .beloved by his scholars, many of whom are now occupying .high positions in New Zealand and Australia. His retirement took place in 1892. For some time past his health had been indifferent. The immediate cause of death was heart failure. For over thirty years the deceased had lived at the Hutt and taken a. warm interest in all matters relating to the welfare-of, the district. He was very fond of music. For twenty years he was choirmaster of St. Paul's. In. conjunction with the late Mr. Justice Johnston he founded the original Wellington Choral Society, ant] lie acted as its conductor for the first fourteen years of its existence. He was an original member of the Thorndon Bowling Club and belonged to the Hutt Bowling Club up to the time of his death.

Mrs. Mowbray . f predeceased her husband. The family consists of three sons (Mr. W. Mowbray, of Levin and Co.. and Messrs. 11. E. and E. L. Slow bray j of the Hutt) and three daughters (Mcsdames H. H. Mirams, Barthorp, and S. Barraud).
