TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
The Legislative Council resumed at 2.30 this afternoon.
The Hon. R. Moore moved, and it <vas agreed to, that the report of the Lands Committee relating to endowments for primary./ and secondary ' education be adopted. The. Hon. Sir Francis Bell moved the second reading of the Imprest ' Supply Bill (£951,000), which' was received from the Lower House.
Reference was made by the Hon. W. Beehan to a question previously asked as to whether the Government would allow ex-members who had served iv the Legislative Council for more than ton years to retain the title of " Honourable." Five persons were affected, and the National Government should take the matter iri hand.
The Hon. J. T. Paul made a complaint regarding, the conditions under which a section of the Public Service was working. Overtime was not always paid. for. He , understood that the work of the coming session, for instance,' was being put on the shoulders of men who were already very busy.
In replying, the Hon. Sir Francis Bell said he had mentioned the point raised by the Hon. Mr. Beehan in Cabinet,.and1 he had not therefore failed to fulfil his promise. As to the Hon. Mr.. Paul's question, the Leader stated that the members of the Public Service had been extraordinarily willing to carry out their share of the etftra work. If the hon. gentleman would give specific cases he would have enquiries made. He had heard no-complaints by members of the Service. The Bill was read a second time, put through its final stages,, and passed.
