CHAPELLE
CITY-ON THE VERGE OF
FAMINE,
AMSTERDAM, ■ 20th June.
Serious food riots have occurred at Avx-la-Chapelle. Thousands marched in procession, but several police charges dispersed them. Some of the demonstrators were injured. Supplies of foodstuffs had not arrived owing to the railway stoppages due to the movements of troops, and the city was reduced .to the verge of famine.
A wireless message states that the. Kolnische v Yolks. Zeitung has published an officer's letter, which, while admitting the existing starvation And tho hardships of tho wives and mothers, urges a censorship on nil letters from relatives to the front, . because complaints are calculated to have evil effects upon the soldiers in the trenches.
