GERMANY'S ALLY A BROKEN REED
WILL THE AUSTRIAN CENTRE HOLD ?
■ (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) (Received June 21, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 20th June. Mr. Lovat Fraser, in the Daily Mail, says that Russia's great stroke has reached the greatest importance. It is irreparably weakening Austria, and may materially affect the future course of the war. It has reached a stage when successful withdrawals are impossible. Much depends on whether the Austrian centre holds, which will be decided within ten days. Germany finds, at a most critical moment of the war, that Austria is a- broken reed. She can only be saved by German aid, when Germany urgently needs all her own troops. ' , (Press Association.) PEACE DEMONSTRATIONS IN VIENNA. (Received June 21, 10 a.m.) GENEVA, 20th June. There have been peace demonstrations in Vienna for several nights, but there has been no violence. The public is dazed rather than consternated at Russia's impetuous advance. The theatres' are empty, and the streets and restaurants are filled nightly with anxious crowds discussing the situation. AUSTRIAN® CLAIM CAINS OF GROUND. AMSTERDAM, 20th June" An Austrian official communique states : The enemy sustained heavy losses in their attacks south-east of Lopuzno. I We have gained ground on the- upper Stochodi THE FIGHTING TOWARDS KOVEL. . . A German official communique states : General yon Linsingen partly repulsed Russian, attacks on the Styr, west of Kolki, and at Stochod, near the Kovel-Rovno railway. The Russians are attacking south-west of Lutsk, in the direction of BrockRUSSIANS' NEW CAS. PETROGRAD, 20th June. General Brusiloff's push opened with a gas attack over thirty miles of sector. A new kind of Russian gas was projected, followed by a hurricane of artillery fire. The composition of the new gas is a secret, and there is no antidote for it. It can be launched in a definite direction, and it will carry for miles under a propellant, ..which is employed when used over a distance; of three miles.. It can also be combined with the explosive charges -for the big shells. 'BRITISH NAVAL DETACHMENT IN RUSSIA. PETROGRAD, 20th June. A British naval armoured-car detachment, which is proceeding to the Russian front, was welcomed at Archangel and Moscow. As they passed along the streets, people showered flowers upon them. Archangel was en fete.
