H. Cockrell, the father of the present proprietor. Settlement, in the district was still in its infancy .when Mr. Cockrell, senr., took possession of the business, the only communication with Wellington being either by small coastalboatsNDr by. road, which was mostly along the sea beach as far as Paekakariki, when the military road was followed;,^ Mr. F. H. Cockrell died in 1895, when his widow carried on the business for a number of years, selling out to Mr. G. L. Bell in 1903. Mr. Bell only carried on the business for about two years, when the present proprietor, Mr. Harold Cockrell, bought it. Under the present ownership, and with increasing settlement, the business has largely increased, and the floor space is now double what it was in Mr. Cockrell's (senr.) time.
