JAS. C. YOUNG, Pullman Motor Agent.

Show Grounds and Garage, Fitzherbcrt

[Published by. arrangement.]

street, Palmerston Nortli

There is being exhibited at the show-to-day by Mr. J. C. Young the 15-22----h.p. Pullman motor car, which has certain original features and cantilever realsuspension that are not usually found in inexpensive cars, and those in search of a really handsome, low-priced, reliable car must- see the Pullman. The chassis is constructed on very sound lines, and efficiency is evidenced in every detail of the Pullman. The body is finished in a neat grey colour, which is an excellentcontrast to the dark sombre blacks of other cars. The grey looks well, wears well, and does not show the dirt so prominently. The Pullman is a car with monobloe engine, and is designed to seat five persons. As a hill climber it is doubtful if there is a better.

Quite one of the features of this fine car is the cantilever rear suspension. The back end of each spring is pivoted on a pin below the axle casing, and at a point about two-thirds' along the spring towards its point it is pivoted on a bracket attached to the frame. The wheel base of the car is 9ft 6in, the track 4ft, B£-in, the overall length 14ft 6in, total width sft 7in, and the weight of the car complete with petrol and water 18J cwt., In addition to the 5-seater the Pullinan1 is sold with a clover leaf- three-seater body. Don't forget to see this car at the show; it is a good one, and sold at a low figure. Mr. J. C. Young, of Fitz-herbert-street Garage, is the district agent for these, and he will give all information to possible car-purchasers.

The above- illustration represents the Rangitikei-street frontage of Messrs. J. Bett and Bayly's, Ltd., new motor garage and carriage works at Palmerston North. The building was designed by Messrs. L. G. West and Son, architects, of Palmerston North, and constructed under their supervision. These works are the largest of their kind in New Zealand, and are fitted „with an elaborate and up-to-date plant, and lit throughout' by electricity generated on the premises by the firm's own power. Some idea of the magnitude of this latest handsome adjdtion to Rangitikei : street, Palmerston's leading business thoroughfare, may be gauged from the fact that the ground ' floor covers 'forty-four thousand square feefc of space, while the

second floor accounts for twelve thousand square feet.

The entrance to the garage, and oar*-' riage and motor showrooms, and motor works and offices, is from Raugitikeistreet, and to the carriage works andmotor body building department from Cuba-street. A feature of this new building is . its immense storage capacity, and its entire immunity from fire, being constructed with, a steel frame and' bricks. An excellent sw'te of offices, fitted with strongrooms, etc., is provided for the clerical .staff, and an underground petrol magazine and storage cellar of largo dimensions are available for large stocks of all lines dealt in by this firm. The business was originally established in .1882, and for many years was devoted solely to coach

and carriage building, but with the advent of the motor Mr. J. Bett's carnage works and Mr. Wm. M. Bayly's motor garage 'and agency amalgamated, and since this took place some years ago the combination has flourished like the proverbial green bay tree, and to-day, withput the slightest fear of 'contradiction, 'we can'say-it is the largest in New Zealand. The staff numbers upward of forty-five, and the factory, which has been fashioned on the lines of the. leading-factories at Home, is re-plete-with every modern convenience for the prompt''carrying out of all work/ entrusted to them. A highly skilled staff of motor engineers is kept constantly employed, and any. class of work pertaining. to any make of car can be carried out at very short notice. Messrs.

Bett and Bayly, ■ Ltd., have shown great enterprise 'in face of the present war times, and it/ is to their credit, and to the credit of Palmerston North, that there is such a go-ahead firm in this coming inland city. The.plant in the carriage building department, and: alsoi in the motor works, .is driven by* a SO^h.p. engine of tha latest type, and suction'gas plant. .In the showrooms, and at their permanent stand at the National Dairy Show, an excellent display of the latest mode! "Buick and Hup motor cars, for ■which ' the . firnr hold . the agency, is being shown, and visitors to Palmerston North are specially invited to call and inspect this, the, best' equipped and largest motor agency and garage in New Zealand.
