MEETING OF SYMPATHISERS
Matters in connection with the new club were discussed at a meeting of citizens on Monday evening. Among those present were :— Messrs. E. D. Bel!, Alex. Gray, C. K. Smith, J. A. Sirason. P. Nathan, James Macintosh, T. M. Wilford (chairman Patriotic Society), W. Ferguson (War Belief Association), L. Tripp, M. Carr, Jolly.. D. A. Ewen, 1?. Charlton, S. Campbell, Mack. Burke, and M. Marks. The committee of the local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association were also present. Capt.. Donald . Sirason, president,. of the New Zealand Beturncd Soldiers' Association, occupied th© chairi and in thr. course of remains gaid a tribute
to the support accorded by Mr. A. P. Whatman, of the Wairarapa.
The meeting resolved to form a society with the object of providing funds for and organising a Returned Soldiers' Club on the lines proposed by the Returned Soldiers' Association. It was decided to elect a- committee for the purposes of- management, to consist of six citizens and six returned discharged soldiers, representing the Returned Soldiers' Association.
Messrs. E. D. Bell, Alex. Gray, James Macintosh, C. E. Smith, and J. A. Simson were elected as the interim committee. The committee was instructed to draft rules for submission to a subsequent meeting.
The committee decided to meet again on Monday, 26th June. Mr. C. W. Batten was requested to act as secretary pro tern. It is intended to go straight ahead and organise a scheme to raise the necessary funds.
