TO THE TERRACE
LIFTS. .FROM BOULCOTT-STREET.
The question of providing easy access to Wellington-terrace from the lower pqrtion of the city is one to which prominence has boen given at. various times during the .last few years.' The proposal bids fair to assume concrete form, before long, by reason of an item in_ the estimates recently passed by the City Council. :
When asked to-day .if anything further had been done in the.matter, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) said he had been pleased to see the interest manifested in the proposal by the council, and a substantial move forward had taken place. The estimates passed had contained; a sum of £2500, which would enable a commencement to bo made with, the scheme in view. The first part-of. the proposal provides for the installation of two vertical lifts at the head of Boulcott-street. These lifts will traverse the inside, of a, ,steel tower, reaching a viaduct at the top, which will bo on a level with the footway in Wellington-terrace. Thb linking- up of the Terrace with the tramway jy<lem is also part of tho scheme, details of which will be considered at a future J.ite. Tho lifts are to bo. on the model of tlioso in use in connection with the Twopenny Tube Railways in London. .
, Mr. W. 11. Morton, City Enginee. '-as the matter in 1 Ji&nd, ' and it will I :t augurated with as much despatch ;u
