IN PURSUIT OF RUA

ANOTHER POLICE PARTY LEAVES GISBORNE.

IBT TELEGRAPH.—raESS ASSOCIATION.)

GISBORNE, 31st March. ) A party of six armed police, under Sub-Inspector . Johnston, left to-day for the "Prophet" Rua's stronghold, to co-operate with, the : Auckland police party.

Rua is believed to be in ambush at Maungatohuta, about seventy miles from Gisbome, over very rough country. The police are not expected to arrive there till lato to-morrow.

People, who are acquainted with the district believe that should occasion arise Rua and his followers will make towards Waikaremoana, where very heavy bush would assist him. A story is in circulation among local Maoris that Rua is pretty well supplied with rifles and ammunition, obtained from Assyrian hawkers, who bought them casually in Auckland and smuggled them into the Urcwera Country under their fancy, goods and cloths. The story that Rua has a machine-gun is generally discredited.

Rua's bodyguard is known to compose several hundred Maoris, and the local Maoris believe he will firmly resist arrest unless confronted by an overwhelming force, in which event he would take to the bush around Waikaremoana.
