SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS.
Writes the Manchester Guardian: — "As a result of the elections in South Africa, General Botha, with, the Unionist support promised him, commands in a House ,of 130 a majority of over 60 for his immediate policy Only by a combination of the forty Unionists with the thirty Nationalists can his own party of fifty-four bis defeated, and on no question at present in 3ight. in Union politics' .will that combination occur. "The issufe before the electors was the simple one, of whether they, approved the policy followed by the Botha Government since the outbreak of war. They have shown very certainly. that they do, and have give.n their Premier the means to carry it to its logical end. General Hertzog has for the time being lost his political chance through ' the excesses of his extremist supporters." "The conditions are such as must test tha statesmanship, the political tact, and the ■ quality of self-sacrifice in General Botha to the utmost. But he has taught the Empire to believe that none of them will fail," says the Telegraph.
