INTERCESSION

OBSERVED BY THE CHURCHES.

The day of intercession in connection with the war was held at most of tho churches yesterday At the Opera House the Salvation Army dedicated chaplains for. service at the front and in- camp. Staff-Captain Walls, of Rangiotu, a_d Ensign Gamier aro leaving for tho front. Commissioner Hodder addressed the chaplains from the text. "Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might." "One of the great sources of strength," he said, "in the great struggle is the firm unwavering conviction that our cause is a righteous one."^ Commissioner Powley led the meeting in prayer, and Mrs. Hodder gave a, brief and telling address.

Rev. A. M. Johnson,'at St. Paul's ProCathedral, reviewed the year i._d -the changes that publio opinion had since undergone. A year ago there were prophets who foretold when the war would be, over ; but no one oared, to prophesy now. But they had learned many things, and one was not to despise the power of the enemy. We had cast away arrogajice and jingoism, gained in steadiness, arid had been brought nearer to God.

Roy. Wm. Shirer, at St. James's Presbyterian Church, Wellington South, preached on intercession. There was, ho said, a special call at this time tc private prayer and prayer in the Church. True men and true women would, according: to their lights, make prayers of intercession. Thousands were, now daily making prayers of intercession _ for those who in the spirit of self-sacrifice were seeking to defend the Empire and gain victory for a righteous cause. Those for whom intercession was made and those who made prayers in their behalf were manyi, but all were precious nlike in the presence of Him who "ever liveth to make .intercession." '
