RED CROSS BRIGADE COMPETITION

The annual competition for the Hessey Challenge Shield, held at Masterton on New Year's Day, was keenly contested and resulted as follows,: —Masterton B Squad (Hopkins, Johnson, Palmer, and Jones), 83 points; Masterton A Squad (Stokes, Rilpon, Jack, and Shackelton), 79 points; Petone Squad (Parrant Kyle, Holgate, and Johnson), 78 points; Newmarket B Squad (Dawson, Wright, Malone, and Bronson), 78\ points; Wellington A, 77 points; Napier, 66 points; and Newmarket A 60 points. Prior to the competition the visiting teams were entertained at luncheon as guests of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society and the local divisions of the brigade. Mr. G. R. Sykes_, M.P., in extending a welcome to the visitors, paid a high tribute to tho work done by the Red Cross organisations. Major Lily complimented the brigade on the excellent muster and expressed the wish that they would meet next year under happier conditions. Mr. H. N. Seed, assistant commissioner, made special reference to the number of previous competitors now serving with the Expeditionary Forces, mentioning the names of Messrs. Raistruk, Andrews, Ward, Nicol, Schulenburg, Richardson, and Thompson, the latter having been lost in the Marquette disaster. An expression of thanks by Mr. W. Cox, district superintendent, on behalf of the visitors concluded a pleasant gathering.
