WYATT, Acting Superintendent, Telegraph Office. MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL PAYING FOR THE HUTT-ROAD. • The monthly meeting of the council tfas held to-day. Present: — Councillors A J. Taylor "(chairman), J. A. Pyle, J. H Haggerty, S. Bryant, G. Monk; and H. J. Monaghan. A deputation of Makara residents waited upon the council, and requested that the people in. Makara Riding should be exempt "\from tho special rate for th<j Hutt-road, as they were already paying a, subsidy to the Karori Borough. They felt that the Porirua Riding was badly treated tin having to pay for the Huttroad, but two wrongs did not make a v right. The people of tho Miramar Bor> ough made moxe use of the Hutt-road than the residents of Makara, who never used the road at all; they had no connection whatever with it. The Chairman said the trouble was that they had been saddled with a better road than they wanted, and they had to pay for it. It was decided to inform the deputation that the council could take no action in the matter. A letter was read from the ranger, Te-> questing permission to withdraw his resignation. Councillors spoke favourably of the excellent work done by the ranger, and it was decided to increase his salary £48 per annum, in addition to the fees received from stock impounded. A letter was read from Mr. W. H. Morton, City Engineer, calling attention to the fact th.it, consequent upon the widening of the Ngahauranga Gorgeroad, and the deposit of filling over the drain from the municipal abattoirs, the drain had been found to be broken in two places. Tho cost of the necessary repairs would be heavy in view of tho difficulty m removing the filling. Accounts amounting to £202 Os 6d were passed for payment. The clerk stated that the overdraft amounted to £938 lls 2d. For the man who walks some ; our easy-fitting boots are a boon. Good makes at 14s 6d, 15s 6d, 19s 6d, 22s 6d, 255. Geo, Fnwlrk T.trf,.
