It was intended to take Rose Pink through to Napier for the Juvenile Handicap, but she got into a wire fence at Trentham and had to be left behind. Her stable mate, Roumania, scored in the County 1 Hack Handicap at Napier on Saturday last, and paid a big dividend. Carillon, who ran-A^cond, was conceding the winner a year and 181b — a pretty , big handicap. Eoumania is trained by C. Pritchard for the local sportsman who races as Mr. Whitney. As a two-year-old Roumania won a Nursery Handicap at Tauherenikau, beating Reputation, and last season scored his only win in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap at Feilding in the spring. Warstep is set down, to make^her first appearance this season in the Mosgiel Handicap, one mile and a quarter, to be run at Wingatui on Friday. The race is worth 250 soys to the winner, and carries a penalty of slb for the New Zealand Cup. At Ricearton. on Saturday morning, Warstep and Snub galloped a mile and a quarter on the ontside of the course pi*oper in 2mib 11 2-ssec. When Woorak won the Spring Stakes at Rosehill a fortnight previously, he carried 9.0, and ran a mile in lmin 40^sec, and has since been first choice. At Randwick last spring Woorak ran second to Mountain Knight in the Derby, and won the Craven Plate. Woorak 'is by the defunct sire Traquaif., who, had he lived, would no doubt have gained a prominent position among successful sires' in the Commonwealth. The first two-year-old race of the season in the South Island, thd Dune Sin Stakes, will be decided at Wingatui oh Friday n6xt. The youngsters left in are two of Sir George Clifford's lot, viz., Wintsrbo'ume (Martian — Neva), .a fullbrother to Danube, and Good Hope (Cannie Chicl — To-morrow), half-brother to Battle Eve. Mr. G. C. Dalgety, also has two in the race, in War Dancer (Martiah — gf-epdancer), the full-brother | to Warstep, and Disdainful (Bonny Glen j — Lady Disdain), the half-sister td Bee and Snub. The others left in are Kilboyne (Kilbroney — Arai-te-Uru), the : half-brother to Taringamutu, Maj clam Butterfly (Martian — Grand Opera), full-sister to Chernbini, and Lady Superior (Bezonian — Lady Principal). Disdainful (one of the first batch of the Bonny Glens) is said to be the smartest youngster at Eiccarton.
