NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Sir Lancelot.")

It was intended to take Rose Pink through to Napier for the Juvenile Handicap, but she got into a wire fence at Trentham and had to be left behind. Her stable mate, Roumania, scored in the County 1 Hack Handicap at Napier on Saturday last, and paid a big dividend. Carillon, who ran-A^cond, was conceding the winner a year and 181b — a pretty , big handicap. Eoumania is trained by C. Pritchard for the local sportsman who races as Mr. Whitney. As a two-year-old Roumania won a Nursery Handicap at Tauherenikau, beating Reputation, and last season scored his only win in the Fitzroy Hack Handicap at Feilding in the spring. Warstep is set down, to make^her first appearance this season in the Mosgiel Handicap, one mile and a quarter, to be run at Wingatui on Friday. The race is worth 250 soys to the winner, and carries a penalty of slb for the New Zealand Cup. Warstep's impost m the race is 10.5, which is exactly a stone more than she was allotted in the big two-mile handicap tb be run at Riccarton in November Other Cup candidates ehgaged in the race are Palisade, All Ready, and Fender. At Ricearton. on Saturday morning, Warstep and Snub galloped a mile and a quarter on the ontside of the course pi*oper in 2mib 11 2-ssec. It is reported that in the event of Warstep incta*ri&g a penalty at Dunedin, Snub will represent the stable in the New Zealand Cup. Palisade and Meltchikoff are engaged in both the Mosgiel and Electric Handicaps i six fUrlongs. .Recorder (second to Medley at Ashburton) and the Kurow winners Robert Bell, and Af ton Loch are the fancies for the sprint event. The A.J.C. handicapper placed Malt Mark, Brattle, and Gigandra abpve.WooTak and Garlin in the Epsom Handicap, but recent f orm niakes the two four-year-olds out to be better performers Over a mile course. Woorak and Garlin have disputed favouritism for tha Epsom Handicap since the weights appeared. After Garlin's win in the ChjSlmsfofd Stakes, weight of money ousted Woorak from the position. When Woorak won the Spring Stakes at Rosehill a fortnight previously, he carried 9.0, and ran a mile in lmin 40^sec, and has since been first choice. At Randwick last spring Woorak ran second to Mountain Knight in the Derby, and won the Craven Plate. Woorak 'is by the defunct sire Traquaif., who, had he lived, would no doubt have gained a prominent position among successful sires' in the Commonwealth. The first two-year-old race of the season in the South Island, thd Dune Sin Stakes, will be decided at Wingatui oh Friday n6xt. The youngsters left in are two of Sir George Clifford's lot, viz., Wintsrbo'ume (Martian — Neva), .a fullbrother to Danube, and Good Hope (Cannie Chicl — To-morrow), half-brother to Battle Eve. Mr. G. C. Dalgety, also has two in the race, in War Dancer (Martiah — gf-epdancer), the full-brother | to Warstep, and Disdainful (Bonny Glen j — Lady Disdain), the half-sister td Bee and Snub. The others left in are Kilboyne (Kilbroney — Arai-te-Uru), the : half-brother to Taringamutu, Maj clam Butterfly (Martian — Grand Opera), full-sister to Chernbini, and Lady Superior (Bezonian — Lady Principal). Disdainful (one of the first batch of the Bonny Glens) is said to be the smartest youngster at Eiccarton. It was considered Pearlform (Formative — Pearl Powder) was unlucky at the start of the Trial Plate at Otakij in jvhich he ran third to Limpet. He was not produced on the second day, but was taken through to Napier, and scored his first win in the Trial Handicap on Saturday. Formative ife trained at Awapuni by A. J. Shearsby for Mr. F. Armstrong, a steward of the Hawkes Bay /(Jockey Club. The withdrawal df Mr. G. D. Green- 1 wood's pair, -Xanthos and Nones, from the Dunedin Guineas, has robbed that race of a lot of interest. The halfdozen youngsters left in the race include tftve"e from Sir Geo. Clifford's stable" (Adjutant, - Battle Eve, and Flying Start), also Wishful, Eedshire, and Snub, who have ehown winning form in tile South this season. Adjutant may b» started in the Mosgiel Handicap, «md After Battle Eve's two defeats at Wanganui Flying Start will probably be allowed to assist Mm. At Eiccarton on Saturday morning Adjutant was seen to advantage in a mile spin with Battle Eve. He is nicely tplaced in the Mosgiel Handicap with 7.4. Last year the Dunedin Guinea's brought 'out only three runners, when First Flight finished in front 6f Rencontre and Mansa-. Chortle represents class. He" made his first appearance this season at Napier on Saturday last, when he conceded just on four stone and a beating to the worst of his opponents (Step — a New Zealand Cup candidate) in the Railway Handicap. His backers had to accept a very short price. Tatterley showed a glimpse of his Australian form in the race. At Randwipk last sjteing he was credited with carrying 11.6 — A stone more than Chortle had in Saturday?s race — and won in lmin 15isec. The racing Tatterlsy and Croesus are having 1 should get them wound dp by November, when' tne Stewards' Handicap is tun.
