V.M.C.A.

ANOTHER SECRETARY FOR THE FRONT. The Defence Minister (Hon. James Allen) has granted the association the privilege of sending a second New Zealand secretary to work amongst our New Zealand soldiers in Egypt. Mr. W. Hislop, of the Dunedin YM.C.A., leaves with the. troops to render service on behalf of the New Zealand Association. Twenty-three secretaries now form a chain from Suez to Gallipoli, being established in every centre where soldiers are gathered The T.M.C.A. halls are a centre of helpfulness. As one soldier writes : " One has only to walk through the streets of Cairo Mid Alexandria to realise how difficult it is for these citizen soldiers, strangers in a strange land, without home or friends, to keep themselves true to their home ideals." The association endeavours to foster to the fullest extent these ideals in its social halls and clubs. To realise the value of the work one has only to turn to correspondence that reaches the officials from officers and men appreciative of the association's efforts. Mr, Hislop, who will possibly join Mr. Jas. L. Hay in the Zeitoun Camp, is being sent to work exclusively for New Zealand's soldiers in camp, in hospitals, and in convalescent homes. He will also carry an equipment for work aboard the transport. Mt. Varney, of the V.M.C.A., Wilh's-street, will be pleased to receive gifte of books, magazines, games, etc., etc., that would be useful to the soldiers en route to their destination. The appointment has been made possible by the generosity of a well-known Christchurch resident, who is paying the Balary of Mr. Hislop for the term of the war, as a testimony to the association's valuable work in Egypt.
