THE VISTULA ADVANCE ATTACK ON WLOCLAWEK
RUSSIANS' SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS PETROGRAD, 2nd February. Official. — " The Russian cavalry has penetrated the German lines fifteen versts (nine miles) north of Sierpc (on the Skrawa, a tributary of the Vistula, and seventy miles north-west of Warsaw). " The German offensive at Lipno (twenty miles west of Sierpc and fifteen miles north of Wloclawek), and Dobnsin (ten miles east of Wloclawek), on 30th January was repulsed. The Germans were thrown back north-west of WloclaweV leaving many dead. " The German offensive south of Bolimow (ten miles east of Lowicz) developed into active operations with very large forces. The German offensive was marked by great tenacity and conducted in close formation, strongly supported from behind. The fighting at Bolimow On 31st January compelled the Russians to retire on their second line of trenches." ENEMY'S HUGE LpSSES AT BORJIMOFF PETROGRAD, 2nd February. There was hand-to-hand fighting at Borjimoff (on the Vistula) on Friday and Saturday, the attack of four German regiments resulting in the loss of four-fifths of the attackers' ' Many" of "trie' prisoners' were -over forty years "of age, and had had Only a fortnight's training. Such troops have hitherto been used as food for cannon, and sent to certai'i death in order to eihaust the Russian ammunition before trained troops delivered the real attack. The Russians, discovering the trick, now reserve their fire. The Germans are now testing the mixing of the Landsturm with the regular battalions. BORJIMOFF POSITIONS RECOVERED- GERM AN . CASUALTIES COLOSSAL (Received February 3, 9.20 a.m.) PETROGRAD, 2nd February. A communique states : By a vigorous counter-attack, we recaptured all the trenches at Borjimoff. The German casualties were colossal. The Germans in the Lipno-Dobryzn fight during the past week lost six thousand killed and many wouiided. The Russians in three days on the Wislok-Nijniaia front, in Galicia, captured seventy-eight officers, 4065 men, four guns, and ten machine guns.
