DUNEDIN CENTRAL BYELECTION

MR. STATHAM AND SIR JOSEPH WARD. • (BT TELEGRAPH.— PRBSB ASSOCIATION.)DUNEDIN, Ist February. Mr. C. E. Statham addressed a crowded meeting in the Garrison Hall to-night. The Mayor, Mr. J. B. Shacklock, presided. The speaker devoted his entire address to an answer to Sir Joseph Ward's address of Friday He took the various portions of the Leader of the Opposition's address, and dealt with them one by one. He dealt severely with Sir J. G. Ward's figures regarding finance, and denied that the present Government had increased taxation, maintaining that the only increase had been on those best able to bear it, such as the large landholders. Dealing with the naval policy, he said he did not favour a local navy for New Zealand, because we could' not afford one of any real value. Hs believed that at the conclusion of the present war there would be a conference between the British Admiralty and the Governments of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and that some definite naval policy would be evolved. It was moved and seconded : "That this meeting of electors of Dunedin Central thanks Mr. Statham for his address, and expresses its entire confidence in him to again worthily represent the electors." The motion was carried practically unanimously, only a few persons voting against it.
