♦ HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED REPORT The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, 30th January. (Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) :—: — Mutton. — The market is steady, with a moderate demand. Canterbury, per lb, s|d. The supply is running short. North Island, 5 7-16 d. Lamb. — The market is very firm, with a - good demand. Canterbury twos, 6|d; | other than Canterbury, this season's, 7d; second grade, 6|d. Beef. — Tlie ma-rket remains firm. Hindquarters, 6 5-16 d; forequarters, sfd. Chilled beef : There is a small supply. Hinds, 7£d per lb; fores, s£d. Butter. — The market is quieter and the demand iB falling off on account of high prices. Danish, 144s to 148s; New Zealand, 140 to 1425; Australian, 136 to 140s; Siberian, none offering, as none ha-s arrived. Argentine,' 136s to 140s. Cheese. — The market is firm at the advance. Canadian, white and coloured, 88s to 90s ; New Zealand, white and coloured, 84s to 85s; occasionally, 868; English cheddar, 92s to 945. Hemp.— There are signs of improvement in the market, which is firm, with more enquiry, on account -of a small supply of German East African, Russian, and Italian. New Zealand, good-fair grade, spot, £28 per ton; fair grade, £26; fair current Manila, £29 10s. January to March shipment : Good-fair, £27 10s; fair, £25 10s; fair current Manila, £29 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 17,000 bales. Wool. — The market is firm at the advance There is a large business doing and prices are strong. Wheat. — The market is firm, with a considerable amount of speculative buying. Nominal quotations : Canadian, 50s per quarter ; American, 595, for immediate delivery ; Argentine, 60s 6d, February to March shipment.
