CABINETMAKERS AND CAR PENTERS
10 THB EDITOR, Sir,— ln a statement recently made by the Minister, he stated the "carpenterthe trade was suffering acutely in consequence of the war." Yet when the opportunity^ offered of giving employment to them in fitting up transport vessels, they are passed over, and preference given to cabinetmakers, whose trads 13 quite brisk. In conversation with a u>aster cabinetmaker, I was informed by him that he required eight or twelve hands. He applied to the union and advertised, but failed to secure any hands. They prefer the higher wages obtainable on the transports. Should this s^ate of things be allowed to continue?— l am, . etc., VERITAS. Wellington, 2nd February.
