HUTT-ROAD
CITY COUNCIL TO ACT. UNDER GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE. The vexed question of the control and maintenance of the Hutt-road was discussed again by a special meeting of the City Council yesterday afternoon. The council had before it the following letter from the Minister for Railway© (Hon W. H. Herries) and the AttorneyGeneral (Hon. A. L. Herdman) :— " To the Mayor, Wellington.— Sir,— As intimated to you in Mr Herdman's letter of 30th October last, the question of the maintenance of the Hutt-road was duly referred to the Government for consideration, and a decision has been arrived at. The Government wishes it to be clearly understood that it does not admit that the existing legislation is insufficient to enable, the Hutt-road scheme to be carried out, and, in particular, it does not subscribe to the view held by your council that the law, as contained in the several statutes passed, would not enable the Wellington City Council to recover contributions for repairs or for maintenance It is, however, recognised that immediate steps should be taken to maintain and repair the road, and, with that object in view, it makes the following suggestions, viz. :— ■„" { ll Tl & t ,jr ithont in a ny way releasany of the liabilities m respect of the Hutt-road created by legislation, the said council shall proceed forthwith to repair the road and tp maintain it until any legislation which the Government may of eSIe SIS eOeMMy * PaSSe 4 k the sessi< * "■" ■ (2) i That the Wellington City Council shall demand, and, if necessary, take proceedings under the present law to recover from contributing local authorities their proportion of the cost of the repairs and maintenance of the road (3) That if the Wellington City Council is unable to recover from contnbutmg local bodies their proportion of expenditure for maintenance and repairs, the Government shall pay a.nv m& -ttT h , lch have not be * n recovered to jj W€lhn e ton City Council, and, shall add any sums b« paid to the council to the sum payable to the Crown for the construction of the road by *ny such defaulting local body." * y The letter was considered in committee by the council, and the Government proposals adopted l
