GENERAL CABLES
"AFTERNOON SHIFT" FAILURE OF CONFERENCE. ALL PROPOSALS REJECTED. (By Telegraph— Press Association— Copyright) (Received January 28, 9.35 a.m.) SYDNEY This Day. The "Afternoon Shift Conference failed, all proposals from either side being rejected. The men's representatives, after stating that the men turned down the proprietors' proposals made at the last conference, made suggestions for the abolition of the second shift at various mines within six to eighteen months. They also asked for an extra 3d per ton after the first three months to the abolition of the shift, and 10 per centum extra for all employees working the second and third shifts. The proprietors turned down the proposals, renewing the offer made at the previous conference, in addition to paying 3d per ton for pickwon coal by the afternoon shift and 2d per ton for ma-chine-won coal. This placed the limitation of the afternoon shift at various mines at from three to five years. No proposals were made for a further conference.
