CHARMS AGAINST DEATH
GERMAN PRISONERS' RELIANCE. AMULETS OF ANCIENT ORIGIN. (TIMES AND SYDNBY SUN SERVICES.) (Received January 28, 8 a.m.) LONDON, 27th January. " Eye-witnees " writes :— ln this seep- ' tical and materialistic age it ib surprisj ing to find the reliance placed in charms. Many prisoners possess soj calkd prayere, really written charms, against death, wounds, disease, and ©very imaginable evil. One was covered with protection against the shot and Kword of visible and invisible foes, and from all kinds of guns. It is curious that the only omitted mischance which actually befell one owner was that of being made a prisoner. Many of. theee amulets are probably of very ancient origin, and have been handed down among the German peasantry for generations.
