SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

The comraittee of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held its usual meeting on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. V. R. Meredith was in the chair, and there were also present Messrs. Jameson, Watson, and Ilott, Mesdames Boyes, Kernot, and Christie, and Miss Richardson. The Taranaki S.P.C.A. wrote regarding the overcrowding of cattle and stock in railway tracks. In one case cited as many as 18 animals were packed in a track meant for 11. The Taranaki Society asked for the Wellington Society's co-operation in an effort to put a stop to this inhuman and shameful state of tilings, which it was alleged seems to be a recognised practice among a certain class of stock dealers. Inspector Henry replied to the letter. He reported that a number of local cases of cruelty had been attended to since the last meeting.
