NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By Sir Lancelot.) G. Price leaves for Australia tomorrow, with a commission to purchase horses in England for Mr. Highden and other New Zealand buyers. A wellknown Australian 'trainer recently informed me that it was an easy matter to purchase horses in England at the present time, with all the foreign markets closed owing to the war. The difficulty was not to make purchases, but to get reliable and experienced persons to bring them safely to their destinations. Since Rerehau won at Trentham, H. Telford has had two additions to his team, in Altcar and Elevonia. In the Aspendale Plate, six furlongs, run on the 20th ittst., the NewJZealand horse Di Gama had 10.7, top"" weight, Veronal (6.8), who arrived from' Melbourne this week, was at the other end of the handicap. She is owned by Mr. J. Patterson, of Patea, who races Passadena. It is reported that - Football will be sent on to Perth from Sydney. West Australia is the only Australian State in which Mr. E. J. Watt's colours have not been carried. Mr. R. E. Harley has been appointed starter for the Ashburton Racing Club's Autumn Meeting. Next week will be the Second occasion that Sir Geo. Clifford's colours have been carried at Hawera. Masterpiece acted as runner-up to Bobrikoff in the Hawera Stakes two years ago. Merrie Guy and Rongora are not to go to Egmont. Fashion Plate has been, eased Up for a month or six weeks and may not be raced until the Wanganui May Meeting. The Auckland trotter Lieutenant, after competing unsuccessfully at the Petone meeting, was railed home yesterday. Cisco, winner of _ the principal event "at the A.J.C. Anniversary Meeting, is a well-bred horse by San Francisco — Lady Wallace. Prior to this season he had not raced for about eighteen months. R. 1 J. Mason left Sutala in J. W. Scott's care at Trentham. The colt is in slings, and the injured limb is in plaster of Paris. It is hoped to be able i to save him for stud purposes. Mr. Greenwood's trainer was considering another trip to Sydney, but the accident to Sutala may make him alter his plans. The horses which arrived from Sydney yesterday had a good passage across and were landed in good condition. _ They were railed through to Masterton in the afternoon. They came across in charge of P. M'Grath, who held a jockey's license with the Victoria Racing Club, and for some time past assisted in E. A. Connolly's Canlfield stable. < He has applied to the Masterton Racing Club for a trainer's license.
A Oliver, who has been laid up in the Davis-streefc Private 'Hospital, will be able to leave the institution in a few days. He will have charge of the Highden team during G. Price's absence in England. The Masterton Racing Club has increased its stakes for the coming meeting by £270. The Masterton Cup has been increased to 300 eov.s. and the Waipipi Handicap, the principal event on the second day, 200 soys. Twelve of tli© events are of the value of 100 soys or over, and third money is given in each race. Perhaps, Rigo Park, and Brunswick, winners at Wairoa, have incurred penalties at the Gisborne Meeting.
